Arthur's Backing for England Spinner

Derbyshire's new coach Mickey Arthur has thrown his full support behind Shoaib Bashir, describing the England off-spinner as a "national treasure" despite his recent setbacks with the national team. The 22-year-old has endured a challenging period after being overlooked for all five Ashes Tests in Australia, but Arthur believes the spinner's best days lie ahead.

Speaking about his new recruit, the experienced coach emphasised Bashir's unique consistency for someone of his age. Arthur, who has worked with spinners across multiple continents during his tenure with Pakistan, South Africa, and Australia, sees exceptional potential in the young Englishman.

Ashes Disappointment and County Switch

Bashir's exclusion from England's Ashes XI came as a surprise to many, given his role as the team's frontline spinner over the previous two years. His struggles during warm-up matches in Australia perhaps contributed to the selectors' decision, with the spinner claiming just two wickets at more than five runs per over in practice before the opening Test. A further disappointing return of 0-115 against Australia A did little to strengthen his case.

England's strategy ultimately favoured an all-pace attack for the first Test before turning to Will Jacks' all-round capabilities for the remaining matches. This tactical shift left Bashir on the sidelines, despite his impressive record of 68 wickets from 19 Test matches, albeit at an average of 39.

New Chapter at Derbyshire

Following his release from Somerset, where he found himself behind England teammate Jack Leach in the pecking order, Bashir has joined Derbyshire in search of regular cricket. The move comes with England's blessing, as the national selectors have specifically instructed him to secure more playing time during the early part of the season.

Arthur's arrival at Derbyshire has coincided perfectly with Bashir's need for guidance and support. The coach's experience with world-class spinners provides exactly the mentorship the young bowler requires as he seeks to redevelop his confidence and refine his skills.

Confidence Despite Setbacks

Despite the disappointments in Australia, Bashir remains bullish about his form and prospects. The spinner maintains he was bowling well during the tour, telling reporters: "I wouldn't say I was not bowling to my best, because I still feel like I was bowling quite nicely. It's just one of those where you're always looking to learn. I'm still so young and I don't take that for granted at all."

Arthur's assessment suggests this resilience will serve Bashir well in his quest to return to international cricket. The coach predicts that while the journey won't be straightforward, the experience gained through both success and failure will prove invaluable for the spinner's development.

With England's spin bowling options remaining limited, a successful season at Derbyshire could quickly shift the betting odds on Bashir's international recall. Arthur's confidence in his new signing's potential suggests that reports of the young spinner's decline may be greatly exaggerated.
