Arthur's Faith in England Reject
Derbyshire's new coach Mickey Arthur has thrown his full support behind Shoaib Bashir following the spinner's difficult winter Down Under. The 22-year-old off-spinner found himself surplus to requirements throughout England's five-Test Ashes series, watching from the sidelines as the tourists opted for pace or all-round options instead.
Arthur, who brings vast international coaching experience from his time with Pakistan, South Africa and Australia, remains convinced that Bashir possesses exceptional qualities. "I haven't seen a spinner that is as consistent as what Shoaib is at the same age so I just think the growth is going to be massive," the coach explained when discussing his new signing's potential.
County Switch After Somerset Release
Bashir's move to Derbyshire came about after Somerset decided to prioritise England colleague Jack Leach as their first-choice spinner. The decision left the young tweaker needing a fresh start, with England selectors reportedly advising him to secure regular county cricket at the season's outset.
The transition represents a significant moment in Bashir's career trajectory. Having amassed 68 wickets across 19 Test appearances at an average of 39, his international record shows promise despite recent setbacks. His unique pathway to England selection - initially chosen despite not being first-choice at county level - makes his current situation all the more intriguing for those monitoring England's spin department.
Australian Struggles and Selection Dilemma
Bashir's exclusion from England's Ashes XI wasn't entirely surprising given his challenging preparation matches. His solitary two wickets in warm-up fixtures proved costly, conceding over five runs per over before the opening Test. A subsequent outing against Australia A yielded figures of 0-115, hardly the form to convince selectors of his readiness for the ultimate challenge.
England's tactical approach further complicated matters. The tourists initially favoured an all-pace attack before turning to Will Jacks' all-round capabilities for the remaining fixtures. This strategic shift left specialist spinners like Bashir watching from the wings, despite Australia's traditionally spin-friendly conditions in certain venues.
Interestingly, the betting markets have begun factoring in Bashir's county move, with some firms adjusting their odds on England's likely spinner for upcoming series based on expected playing time at Derbyshire.
Maintaining Confidence Despite Setbacks
Despite the recent disappointments, Bashir maintains a positive outlook on his recent performances. "I wouldn't say I was not bowling to my best, because I still feel like I was bowling quite nicely," he reflected when discussing his Australian experience.
Arthur's confidence in his new recruit extends beyond mere technical ability. "From what I've seen with Shoaib the world is going to be his oyster. He truly is a national treasure," the coach declared, suggesting bigger things await the young spinner.
The seasoned coach acknowledges that Bashir's journey won't be straightforward, noting that "it would be lovely if it was just smooth sailing but the journey is going to be up and down." However, Arthur views these challenges as essential experience-gathering opportunities that will ultimately strengthen Bashir's game and mental resilience.
With Derbyshire providing a fresh environment and Arthur's proven track record of developing international-quality spinners, Bashir's immediate focus centres on rediscovering the form that initially earned him England recognition. The county season ahead could prove pivotal in determining whether he reclaims his place in England's Test plans.
