Season Preview
The 2026 Rothesay County Championship promises to be one of the most compelling in recent memory. Fourteen rounds of red-ball cricket, running from 3 April through to 27 September, with the Dukes ball restored for every single fixture after counties voted decisively to scrap the much-maligned Kookaburra experiment. That alone should sharpen the contest.
The structure remains unchanged. Division One retains its ten counties, Division Two its eight, with two up and two down. Nottinghamshire are the defending champions, having clinched their first title in 15 years in thrilling fashion on the penultimate day of the 2025 season. Surrey, meanwhile, will be desperate to reclaim a crown they made their own for three consecutive years before Notts dethroned them.
Division 1 Contenders
Surrey remain the bookmakers' favourites at 7/4, and it is difficult to argue with that assessment on paper. Rory Burns, Dom Sibley, Ben Foakes, Gus Atkinson, Sam Curran and Jordan Clark give them depth that most counties can only envy. The addition of Jayden Seales as an overseas signing adds genuine pace. Their weakness last season was an inability to kill off matches — eight draws in 14 games cost them dearly.
Somerset are second favourites at 5/1 and have bolstered their attack with Sean Abbott for the first eight Championship fixtures, followed by India's Rahul Chahar for the final eight. Taunton remains a fortress and Somerset have been knocking on the door for years.
Nottinghamshire at 13/2 should not be underestimated. Haseeb Hameed's side proved they could handle the pressure of a title race, and that kind of collective belief is not easily replicated.
The dark horse? Warwickshire at 12/1 look generous. They have recruited aggressively — Jordan Thompson from Yorkshire, Keith Barker from Hampshire, Nathan Gilchrist from Kent, and Beau Webster as their overseas pick.
Sussex start the season with a 12-point deduction following an ECB intervention over sustained financial losses. It would take an extraordinary effort to avoid a relegation battle from that starting position.
Division 2 Promotion Race
Durham are clear favourites at 57/17 to win Division Two. Their relegation last season came by a single point after a final-day capitulation. With David Bedingham's class with the bat and Kemar Roach's experience with the new ball, they have the quality to bounce straight back.
Lancashire at 7/2 are the principal rivals. They have had a productive winter, bringing in Ajeet Singh Dale and Paul Coughlin, while their domestic core of James Anderson, Tom Bailey, Keaton Jennings and Luke Wells remains formidable.
Key Players to Watch
Beau Webster (Warwickshire) arrives from Australia as one of the most exciting all-rounders in world cricket. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball in English conditions could elevate Warwickshire from outside contenders to genuine title challengers.
Ajaz Patel (Leicestershire) is a fascinating signing. The left-arm spinner famously took all ten wickets against India in Mumbai, and now finds himself tasked with keeping a newly promoted side in Division One.
Sean Abbott (Somerset) has developed into a genuine all-rounder at international level. His first eight matches at Taunton could define Somerset's title challenge.
Betting Tips
Division 1 outright winner — Surrey at 7/4. They remain the strongest squad in the country and have the batting depth and bowling variety to sustain a challenge across all 14 rounds.
Division 1 each-way — Warwickshire at 12/1. The recruitment of Webster, Thompson, Barker and Gilchrist represents the most transformative off-season business in Division One. At 12/1, an each-way punt paying the top three looks excellent value.
Division 2 winner — Lancashire at 7/2. Durham may be favourites, but the psychological scars of that final-day collapse could linger. Lancashire have a deeper squad and more experienced campaigners.
Relegation market — Sussex. Starting 12 points adrift with a restricted budget makes them the obvious candidates.
