The Blaze strengthened their grip on top spot in the Women's One-Day Cup with a hard-fought five-wicket victory over Surrey at Trent Bridge, thanks largely to a magnificent rescue act from former England international Georgia Elwiss. Her unbeaten 76 from 95 deliveries transformed what looked like a potential collapse into a commanding triumph, extending The Blaze's winning streak to four matches.
Gordon's bowling brilliance sets foundation
Captain Kirstie Gordon orchestrated Surrey's downfall after winning the toss and electing to field under grey skies. The spinner produced a devastating spell that saw her claim three wickets in just seven balls, finishing with figures of 3-37 as Surrey crumbled from a promising position. Early breakthroughs from Charley Phillips and Lucy Higham had already unsettled the visitors, with Paige Scholfield bowled by Phillips and Alice Monaghan caught by Tammy Beaumont at square leg following a mistimed pull shot.
Gordon's intervention proved decisive as she ripped through Surrey's middle order, removing Bryony Smith, Alice Davidson-Richards, and Jemima Spice in quick succession to leave the visitors reeling at 57-5. Only a patient partnership between Kira Chathli and Priyanaz Chatterji offered any resistance, with the latter top-scoring with 45 from 68 balls batting at number seven.
Surrey's recovery efforts fall short
Despite finding themselves in deep trouble, Surrey managed to post a competitive total of 164 thanks to some determined lower-order batting. Chatterji's measured innings, containing just two boundaries, provided the backbone of their recovery alongside Chathli's 28. However, once Chathli fell lbw to Josie Groves, Surrey's hopes of reaching a challenging total diminished rapidly.
The tail offered little resistance as Kathryn Bryce and Phillips mopped up the remaining wickets, with Tilly Corteen-Coleman yorked to end the innings with 42 balls still unused. Surrey's total looked below par on a ground where batting typically becomes easier as the match progresses.
Dramatic chase rescue mission
The Blaze's pursuit got off to a nightmare start as Surrey's bowlers struck back with venom. Corteen-Coleman had Beaumont caught at slip, while Maitlin Brown produced a superb double-wicket burst to remove both Bryce sisters and Amy Jones, leaving the hosts gasping at 19-3 and later 61-5.
Enter Elwiss and Emma Jones to stage one of the competition's great rescue acts. Their unbroken partnership of 105 runs demonstrated composure and tactical awareness, with Elwiss anchoring the innings while Jones provided steady support with 36 not out from 49 balls. "We've had a lot of games over a short space of time with a lot of moving parts, people coming in and out of the side, so I am really proud of the group," Elwiss reflected post-match.
This victory extends The Blaze's impressive record to five wins from six matches, significantly improving their outright odds for the One-Day Cup title. Meanwhile, Surrey's third consecutive defeat after their encouraging start has seen their championship hopes take a serious dent, leaving them needing to rediscover their early-season form quickly.
