Jade Stadium
Christchurch
Jade Stadium, formerly known as Lancaster Park, served as Christchurch's premier cricket venue until the devastating 2011 earthquake forced its permanent closure. The ground had a rich sporting heritage dating back to 1881, originally functioning as a rugby venue before becoming a multi-purpose stadium that hosted both rugby and cricket matches.
The stadium's cricket pitch was known for offering relatively balanced conditions, though it generally favored bowlers over batsmen. This characteristic is reflected in the modest first innings average of 214.33 from the three ODI matches hosted there, with teams batting first managing only a 33.33% win rate. The surface typically provided some assistance to seam bowlers, particularly early in innings, while spinners could extract turn as matches progressed.
While Jade Stadium didn't host numerous high-profile cricket matches compared to other New Zealand venues, it provided an intimate atmosphere for the games it did stage. The ground's capacity of around 36,000 for cricket created a more enclosed feel than many international venues, with spectators relatively close to the action.
The stadium's legacy ended abruptly when the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake rendered the structure unsafe and ultimately led to its demolition. Cricket in Christchurch has since moved to Hagley Oval, but Jade Stadium remains remembered as an important part of Canterbury cricket history, representing an era when the region's premier sporting events were concentrated at Lancaster Park.
