Jade Stadium, Christchurch

Christchurch
Jade Stadium, formerly known as Lancaster Park, served as Christchurch's premier cricket venue before its closure following the devastating 2011 Canterbury earthquake. The stadium was originally established in 1880 and became New Zealand's second-largest cricket ground, with a capacity of approximately 36,000 spectators. The venue was renowned for its fast, bouncy pitches that typically favored pace bowlers, particularly during the cooler months when seam movement was pronounced. The ground's dimensions were well-balanced, measuring roughly 150 meters square, providing an even contest between bat and ball. Canterbury's windy conditions often played a significant role in matches, with the nor'wester winds affecting both batting and bowling strategies. Throughout its history, Jade Stadium hosted numerous international fixtures, including Test matches, One Day Internationals, and domestic competitions. The ground witnessed several memorable encounters, particularly during New Zealand's golden era in the 1980s and 1990s. The venue was known for its passionate local support, with Canterbury cricket fans creating an electric atmosphere during major matches. The stadium's distinctive concrete bowl design provided excellent viewing angles for spectators, while its proximity to the Southern Alps created a dramatic backdrop. Following the 2011 earthquake damage, the venue was demolished in 2019, ending more than a century of cricket history. A new stadium, Te Kaha, is planned for the same location, set to continue Christchurch's cricket legacy.
