Lord's, London
LondonEnglandCapacity: 31,100
Lord's Cricket Ground, universally known as the "Home of Cricket," is the most iconic venue in world cricket. Founded by Thomas Lord in 1787 and situated in St John's Wood since 1814, the ground is owned by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and has been at the heart of the game for over two centuries. With a capacity of 31,100, it hosts England internationals, Middlesex county matches, and major finals including five Men's Cricket World Cup finals.
The ground's most recognisable feature is the magnificent Victorian Pavilion, built in 1889-90 and housing the legendary Long Room through which players walk to reach the pitch. At the opposite end, the futuristic J.P. Morgan Media Centre — winner of the RIBA Stirling Prize in 1999 — provides a striking contrast of old and new. Lord's is also famous for its distinctive slope, running approximately 2.5 metres from the Grandstand side down to the Mound Stand, which significantly influences both bowling lines and batting shots.
Pitch conditions at Lord's tend to favour pace bowling, particularly early in a match when the new ball swings and seams in both directions. Since 2022, pace bowlers have averaged 26.33 compared to 39.78 for spinners. In Test cricket, first-innings scores average around 301 runs, while in T20s the average sits at 145. Teams batting first win roughly 50% of Tests and 56% of T20 matches here. The ground has been the stage for some of cricket's greatest moments, including Don Bradman's 254 in 1930, Graham Gooch's 333 against India in 1990, and England's extraordinary Super Over victory in the 2019 World Cup final.
Getting to Lord's is straightforward — St John's Wood station on the Jubilee Line is just a five-minute walk away. On match days the atmosphere is electric, blending the traditions of MCC members in the Pavilion with lively crowds in the Compton and Edrich Stands. Whether you're watching a five-day Test or a Hundred match under floodlights, Lord's delivers an experience unlike any other cricket ground in the world.
