New Zealand captain Tom Latham has delivered a clear message to his squad ahead of their Test encounter with Ireland at Stormont: there will be no looking beyond Wednesday's four-day fixture despite the looming three-match series against England in June. The fifth-ranked Black Caps arrive in Belfast as overwhelming favourites against an Irish side preparing for just their 13th Test match appearance, yet Latham's emphasis remains firmly on the immediate challenge.
Speaking to BBC Sport NI, Latham stressed his team's approach: "We are solely focused on this match and we're looking forward to what the next four days presents. We want to come here and display our skills as best we can and play our brand of cricket as best we can."
Squad Changes Present Opportunity for Fringe Players
The touring party features several changes from New Zealand's strongest available XI, with franchise cricket commitments affecting selection. However, Latham views this as an opportunity rather than a weakness, noting the Test experience within his current group.
"We come here with a slightly different squad, some guys not being here through other commitments with franchise stuff," Latham explained. "But most of the guys in this group have played Test cricket and it's important to learn from those experiences."
This squad rotation could shift the outright odds slightly, though New Zealand's recent form - including victories over the West Indies and Zimbabwe in their 2025 Test appearances - suggests they remain well-equipped for Belfast success.
Limited Preparation Against Unfamiliar Opposition
One significant challenge facing New Zealand is the scarcity of recent Test footage featuring Ireland. With the hosts having played just 12 previous Test matches, preparation has required a different approach from Latham's coaching staff.
"From an Ireland point of view there's not a huge amount of footage of Test matches so for us it's really important for us to adapt on the go and adapt to conditions as quickly as we can," the captain acknowledged.
Fortunately for the visitors, previous white-ball tours to this region provide some familiarity with local conditions. Ireland's most recent home Test saw them defeat Zimbabwe at the same venue in July 2024, demonstrating their capability on familiar territory.
Weather Concerns and English Summer Ahead
Belfast's unpredictable climate remains a potential factor, with Latham expressing cautious optimism about completing the full fixture. "Fingers crossed, the weather remains sunny like this and we can get a full game in," he noted.
Following this Belfast encounter, New Zealand's attention will legitimately turn to their English summer campaign, featuring Tests at Lord's, the Oval, and Trent Bridge. However, any complacency against Ireland could prove costly both in terms of preparation and confidence heading into that prestigious series. Latham's measured approach suggests the Black Caps understand that underestimating opponents - regardless of rankings - rarely ends well in Test cricket's unforgiving format.
