Lyth Turns Back the Clock at Headingley
There are innings that win matches, and then there are innings that make you stop whatever you're doing and simply watch. Adam Lyth delivered one of the latter at Headingley on Friday evening, crafting a breathtaking unbeaten 131 from 63 deliveries — the highest individual score in this year's Vitality Blast — to drive Yorkshire to a commanding 207-4 and ultimately a 41-run victory over Leicestershire Foxes.
It was only the second T20 hundred of Lyth's career and his first since 2017, yet it showed none of the rustiness you might associate with such a long wait. The veteran opener and Jonny Bairstow laid the platform with a brisk 91-run opening partnership before England leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed — who finished with 3-33 — removed Bairstow lbw to peg Yorkshire back temporarily. Lyth, however, was utterly immovable. He reached his century from 55 balls with a typically forthright straight six off Ben Green, then pillaged 24 runs from Josh Hull's final over alone. For punters tracking the North Group outright market, Yorkshire's form is impossible to ignore — this result further shortens their odds of claiming a quarter-final berth.
Tye and Hassan Dismantle the Foxes' Chase
Leicestershire gave themselves every chance of a grandstand chase when Rishi Patel smashed 34 from just 14 balls to get their reply off to a flying start. Yet the Foxes' batting order buckled alarmingly, losing four wickets for a mere nine runs as AJ Tye ran through the middle order with career-best Blast figures of 4-15. Ben Cox offered stubborn resistance with 47 from 34 balls, but Hassan Ali's 4-25 sealed the contest as Leicestershire were bowled out for 166-9, well short of the 208 required. Yorkshire remain second in the North Group, though leaders Notts Outlaws extended their own winning run to six with a nervy two-run victory over Durham at Chester-le-Street.
Somerset Bring Northants' Perfect Record to a Bruising End
Over in the Central and West Group, the story of the evening was Somerset's emphatic 105-run dismantling of Northamptonshire Steelbacks at Northampton. The Steelbacks had been the standout side of the competition, winning every game and building an eight-point cushion at the summit, but holders Somerset exposed them in ruthless fashion. Despite the defeat, Northamptonshire's lead at the top remains substantial, and they will still be among the favourites to qualify — though this result will cause a reassessment of their outright Group odds. Gloucestershire also lost ground, falling to Warwickshire Bears by 30 runs, while Worcestershire Rapids leapfrogged Glamorgan with a low-scoring 15-run win at Cardiff to boost their own last-eight prospects considerably.
South Group: Baker Stars as Middlesex End Losing Streak
In the South Group, Hampshire Hawks maintained their grip at the top thanks largely to England seamer Sonny Baker, whose four-wicket haul helped them squeeze past Kent Spitfires by 19 runs. Meanwhile, Middlesex finally halted a damaging run of five consecutive defeats as all-rounder Luke Hollman produced a match-winning performance with both bat and ball against Essex at Chelmsford, guiding his side home by four wickets.
With the T20 Blast quarter-final spots beginning to take shape across all three groups, the next fortnight promises to be decisive. Lyth's stunning display will undoubtedly be the highlight of the round, but the broader picture — Somerset's potency, Yorkshire's momentum, and Northants' first wobble — suggests the competition is beautifully poised heading into the final stretch.
