Tournament Overview
The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League kicked off on 28 March at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, and the tournament runs through to the final on 31 May. Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru opened with a statement six-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad, with Virat Kohli anchoring the chase of 203, while Mumbai Indians followed up on day two with a convincing win over Kolkata Knight Riders.
The format reverts to the two-group structure last used in 2023. Group A contains Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings. Group B comprises Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gujarat Titans, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants. Each side plays 14 league matches before the top four enter the playoffs.
Key Teams and Players to Watch
Mumbai Indians head the outright market for good reason. Hardik Pandya's squad boasts Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, Will Jacks and Rohit Sharma. The Bumrah-Boult new-ball combination is arguably the most threatening in the tournament.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru are the defending champions and retain the core of their 2025 title-winning side. Kohli scored 657 runs at 54.75 last season and is supported by Phil Salt, Rajat Patidar and Tim David.
Punjab Kings reached the 2025 final and carry genuine momentum. At 15/2 outright, they represent one of the more interesting value propositions in the market.
Best Betting Markets for IPL 2026
Outright Winner: The flagship market. Prices settle after a few weeks of form, so early-season value is real.
Top Batsman (Orange Cap): Awarded to the tournament's leading run-scorer. Rewards identifying players who bat top three and play all 14 league matches.
Top Bowler (Purple Cap): Awarded to the leading wicket-taker. Spinners who bowl four overs every match tend to dominate.
Match Sixes and Totals: With the Impact Player rule inflating scores, the overs market consistently leans towards high totals.
Outright Winner Predictions
Mumbai Indians — 10/3: The favourites and justifiably so. Squad depth is remarkable and Bumrah's presence elevates the entire bowling attack.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru — 9/2: Defending champions with a settled side. Kohli showed in the opening match he remains the tournament's most complete batsman.
Punjab Kings — 15/2: This is where I see genuine value. Punjab have match-winners throughout the squad and came within six runs of the 2025 title. I would suggest a 1-point stake here.
Chennai Super Kings — 8/1: CSK's experience and consistency in reaching playoffs makes them perennial contenders.
Top Batsman and Top Bowler Picks
Orange Cap — Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans): Gill has averaged above 50 across the last three IPL seasons. At around 8/1, he represents better value than more fancied names like Kohli.
Purple Cap — Varun Chakravarthy (Kolkata Knight Riders): The mystery spinner has taken 58 wickets across the last three IPL seasons. Spinners who bowl in the middle overs accumulate quietly.
Bet Responsibly
The IPL runs for two months with matches nearly every day — it is easy to overtrade. Set a tournament budget before the first ball is bowled and stick to it. Never chase losses after a bad result.
