There is a quiet authority about Southern Brave right now that any analyst would admire. Five matches in, five without defeat — and this latest victory at Lord's, a ground where the home side were desperate to impress, felt like another statement of intent. London Spirit pushed them close, but Brave found a way, as leaders so often do. For the outright market, this result only tightens Brave's grip on the title race, and bookmakers will likely be shortening their odds further after a performance full of character.
Molineux the Architect with Ball and Bat
Captain Sophie Molineux was quite simply outstanding in both disciplines. With the ball, she was devastating early on, removing Amy Jones for three and Marie Kelly for a golden duck within the same three-ball spell to reduce Spirit to 10-2. She finished with figures of 3-7 — the kind of return that shapes an entire innings. Spinners Tilly Corteen-Coleman and Sarah Glenn each chipped in with two wickets apiece, and Molineux returned later to bowl Deandra Dottin for five, ensuring Spirit could only post 114-8 from their 100 balls.
Marizanne Kapp offered Spirit some resistance with 34, building a 27-run stand with Grace Harris and then another with the impressive Nadine de Klerk, who top-scored with 38 from just 28 balls. De Klerk was one of only three Spirit batters to reach double figures, and her contribution would prove relevant later in the match.
A Chase Full of Drama
Chasing 115, Brave made a wobbly start. Lizelle Lee was gone for a duck inside the first four balls, and both Laura Wolvaardt and Jemimah Rodrigues departed for 13 and 12 respectively. At that stage, a fifth consecutive win was not looking straightforward. Step forward Maia Bouchier, who anchored the reply with a composed 46 from 38 balls. Alongside Molineux, she put on a 52-run partnership that brought Brave to within touching distance of their target.
Then came the twist. With the scores level, Bouchier was stumped off Charlie Dean's bowling, and Molineux — having done so much with bat and ball — hit the very next delivery from De Klerk straight to Dottin. Two wickets, no runs, and suddenly the tension was palpable. It was left to debutant Naomi Dattani to keep her nerve, and she delivered with a winning single off just her second ball. A dramatic finish, but the two points are what matter.
Table Talk and What It Means Going Forward
Brave now sit eight points clear of second-placed Trent Rockets in the women's standings, albeit having played one game more. London Spirit, meanwhile, find themselves in fourth with a record of one win, two defeats and a tie from four outings. Their top order continues to look fragile, and unless they find more consistent contributions beyond De Klerk and Kapp, this Spirit side could find the pressure mounting quickly.
From a coaching perspective, what impresses me most about Brave is not just their talent but their composure in tight moments — even when they nearly threw this one away at the death. A side with genuine title credentials does not panic, and Naomi Dattani's calm finish was a microcosm of the whole unit. With five wins from five, Southern Brave look every bit the team to beat in this competition.
