Rockets hold their nerve in a tense finish at Trent Bridge
Trent Rockets are starting to look like genuine title contenders. A fourth successive victory in The Hundred — this time a nerve-shredding five-run win over Sunrisers Leeds at Trent Bridge — moves them four points clear at the summit of the men's competition. It wasn't always pretty, and for a period it looked as though the visitors might pinch it, but Trent Rockets found a way, as leaders so often do.
Ben Duckett was once again the cornerstone of the Rockets' batting effort, compiling a measured 64 from 47 deliveries. Having scored 49, 75, 52 not out, 0, and 64 across his last five innings, the left-hander is in the kind of form that makes him almost impossible to leave out of any side. His innings featured nine boundaries and was the steady heartbeat around which others played more freely.
Donald's explosive cameo sets the tone
While Duckett provided the anchor, it was debutant Aneurin Donald who set early pulses racing. Promoted into the batting order during the powerplay following Finn Allen's dismissal — bowled by Brydon Carse — Donald showed absolutely no signs of debut nerves. He cracked three sixes and raced to 40 off just 19 deliveries, sharing a 63-run second-wicket partnership with Duckett in which he was very much the dominant partner.
Donald's stay was eventually ended by Carse, who finished with figures of 2-20, but the damage had been done. Tim David contributed a somewhat laboured 24 from 22 balls, though he made his presence count with a crucial six off the penultimate delivery to help Rockets post a competitive 146-4 from their 100 balls.
Amir turns the match on its head
Sunrisers Leeds looked well on course when Mitchell Marsh and Harry Brook pieced together a 71-run third-wicket stand. With 35 required from the final 20 deliveries, the momentum appeared to have shifted decisively towards the visitors. That was when Mohammad Amir stepped up to deliver one of the passages of play that could define Trent Rockets' season.
Amir conceded just five runs across four extraordinary deliveries, strangling the life out of the chase. Brook, who had been in fine touch on his way to 46 from 33 balls, attempted to break the stranglehold and found Duckett taking a sharp diving catch in the covers — a dismissal that will be replayed many times. Marsh followed shortly after, caught behind by Sam Billings off the same bowler for 41, leaving Amir with outstanding figures of 2-20. The equation of 25 from the final 10 balls was simply beyond Dan Lawrence and Tom Alsop, and Sunrisers ended on 141-4, five runs adrift.
Rockets pull clear with title odds shortening
From a betting perspective, this result will almost certainly see Trent Rockets' outright Hundred title odds trimmed further. Four wins on the bounce, a four-point cushion at the top, and a squad that appears to be clicking at exactly the right moment — bookmakers will be taking note. Sunrisers Leeds, meanwhile, sit fifth with two wins and two defeats, and face a significant challenge to mount a late surge.
As a former coach, what impresses me most about Rockets is their ability to win in different ways. Today it was Duckett's craft and Amir's experience that proved decisive. That kind of squad depth is what separates champions from contenders, and right now, Trent Rockets look every inch the former.
